It’s tough having to watch the same surface-level, child-friendly movies with your kids. That’s why Mila Christina is sharing appropriate movies that everyone will love in this week’s blog!

Here are ten movies for kids that have a little more depth, and themes that parents can relate to:

  • Soul
  • Pixar's Soul

This movie follows the life of a music teacher and his struggle to figure out what he is meant to do with his life. He suddenly ventures into a sort of afterworld, which helps him discover the “meaning of life” and his purpose. While the movie’s theme is relatable and the plot is enjoyable, this movie should also be celebrated because it is Pixar’s first black main character ever.

  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox fights for what he believes in in this movie when farmers try to declare war on them. This movie shows that teamwork and following your dreams can always make a difference.

  • The Parent Trap
  • The Parent Trap

While this movie is definitely unrealistic, it is still a classic. Twin girls separated at birth find each other at summer camp and create a plan to get their divorced parents back together. This movie is fun, not TOO cheesy and very family-oriented.

  • The Princess and the Frog
  • The Princess and the Frog

Every little girl should watch this film. While the movie’s plot is mostly showing Tiana’s adventures to change back into a human after she turns into a frog, it also follows Tiana’s journey to making her dream of owning a restaurant a reality.

  • Home Alone
  • Home Alone

Everyone loves Home Alone, and you don’t have to only watch it at Christmas time! A young boy gets into shenanigans when his family goes on vacation and leaves him behind on accident. The main character learns how important family is, even if they do get on his nerves most of the time.

  • Finding Dory
  • Finding Dory

Okay... this movie genuinely cracks me up even though it’s meant for kids. Dory, as always, is hilarious and her journey was a lot more interesting than Nemo and Marlin’s journey in Finding Nemo.

  • Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events
  • Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events

This one might be a little dark for the more easily-frightened, younger kids, but it is a great film with a lot of adventure, suspense and mystery! Try it out with your kid, they may just love how odd and funny all of the characters are.

  • Elf
  • Will Ferrell in Elf

Of course this one is easy for parents to watch. I haven’t met one adult yet who doesn’t enjoy Will Ferrell movies, and this one is super kid-friendly but still laugh-out-loud funny!

  • Akeelah & the Bee
  • Akeelah and the Bee

“Anyone can do anything, no matter where they came from” is the premise of this wonderful movie. As long as you stay focused and believe in yourself, you can make your dreams come true!

  • Mulan
  • Mulan

Mulan is a great watch because it teaches little girls that they can do exactly what any boy can do, and sometimes better. The movie touches on the value of family and of breaking down barriers.
