Congratulations! You are about to bring a new baby into your home! It’s an exciting time, but will also be difficult and stressful, which is why it is smart to prepare your space before you return with a new little one that will consume a lot of your time. Easing any stress that you can is the best thing you can do right now while you still have the time.

Below, you can read our team’s checklist for prepping a home for a newborn to get you organized and ready.

THE TO-DO LIST

Loads of Laundry - With poopy diapers, spit-up, breast milk, etc., you are bound to find more stains and spills than usual on yours and the baby’s clothing. Make sure to wash ALL of your sheets, blankets, and clothes before the baby arrives so that you won’t have to worry about doing laundry during one of the most time-consuming and difficult periods of raising your baby.

Prep Your Kitchen - It’s time to make room for the baby gear! You will be needing to refrigerate multiple bottles of breastmilk or formula, so throwing out anything old or unnecessary is helpful. You should also make room in one cabinet for baby bottles, containers, etc. If you are worried about having no time to cook for yourself, buy a week’s worth of healthy frozen dinners and make room for them in your freezer. Or if you hate pre-made meals from the store, prep them yourself at home and keep them in the freezer.

Deep Clean - Turn on some music and make sure to spray, scrub, sweep and wipe down every inch of your home before the due date. Once you get back from the hospital you will be having long days and even longer nights with your newborn - cleaning will be the last of your worries!

Safety First - Your newborn, of course, won’t be moving around a lot on their own yet. But it is still smart to baby proof the house (cover sharp corners, move away some more risky objects or furniture) to get ahead of the game for when he/she/they do start crawling.

Get Guest Ready - Most likely you will be having a few visitors who are excited to see the new baby, you may even have your parent or sibling stay over to help out the first week as well. Try to prep clean sheets, extra toiletries, fresh towels, air mattresses, etc for any guests so that you won’t have to once you return from the hospital.
